Both diamonds have a 66% depth but different pavilion angles. The left stone has very steep pavilion angles to achieve a weight category but the stone on the right maintained proper pavilion angles by leaving an extremely thick girdle instead.
The last resort of a cutter in getting maximum weight retention, is to cut steep pavilion angles, which results in lost light containment in the finished product. By sacrificing pavilion angles, the cutter must be aware of the inevitable black hole that comes with it. Instead, by leaving the bottom angle close to 40.75 ° , along with a very thick or extremely thick girdle, at least the cutter then knows that the stone will face up presentably, and will have much more brilliance and dispersion, and still potentially at the desired weight category.
