proportioned Euro, except with a large culet chip

In the same proportioned Euro, except with a large culet chip, this will cause substantially more weight loss since the depth of the stone has been reduced even further.

In determining weight loss for a very flat Euro or mine cut, the method mentioned just above is again employed. One potential hazard that you must watch for, is a very heavy crown with a very flat pavilion. These are common in the older Euros or mine cuts. Weight retention was the reason for leaving such odd proportions in these older cuts. This typically came from two point orientations of the rough crystal. This orientation includes two four-grain convergences in the girdle and a single grain in the table, leaving a lot of material for a bulky crown and not enough for proper angles on the pavilion. Of course back then, cutters were not aware of the importance of angles for proper light behavior; their main concern was in weight retention.
