Recutting Chipped Old Cuts
Old style cuts often have chips which will prompt the cutter or dealer to recut the stone into modern proportions. Even small to medium size chips sometimes will have no effect on the additional weight loss, when refashioning a Euro or mine cut into a modern. For example, if you have a very flat Euro (or a flat modern for that matter) with a medium size chip out of the girdle, the diameter of the stone must be reduced considerably to raise the pavilion and/or crown angles to acceptable limits. The chip disappears since it is in the path of the diameter reduction. If the chip travels into the crown or pavilion, this portion will also disappear, since the cutter is cutting material away from the base of the facet (next to the girdle), in order to raise the angles from their original flatness.
