A Secret History
The history of diamond cutting has been poorly documented, probably due to a desire to keep the trade very secretive and inside family circles. It is thought that some form of gem cutting (as we know it now) began in Europe and India during the fourteenth century. It is likely that the art of cutting would have developed more quickly, if it hadn't been for the superstitious belief that rough diamond lost its magical properties if altered.
