The Table Percentage Bowing Method

Image of the perfect square in a diamond

A perfect square in a 60% table size. Flat or elongated star facets will affect the results of this method.

Three different squares in a diamond

A 54% table leaves the square shape bowed inward (top). A 65% table leaves the square shape bowed out slightly (middle). A 72% table leaves the square shape bowed out significantly (lower).

Square bowed out in a diamond

You can see the square is bowed out slightly in this large table.

The Table Percentage Bowing Method can also be effective in table size estimation. With properly cut star facets, a 60% table forms a perfect square. Study the following illustrations to locate the square(s) in the table facet arrangement.

When the lines of the square bow inward, you know the table is smaller than 60% and when the lines bow outward, you know the table is larger than 60%.
